Authenticity: The Stuff In Your Bag!

You Must Not Know ‘Bout Me! This is a popular line from a Beyoncé song. It is also a common phrase used to let someone know the thing they said or the thing they did proves that their estimation of who you are is totally incorrect! But, what do you say to yourself once you realize that you are not living up to who you really are? What do you say when who you are, what you say, what you do, or the way you allow others to treat you is totally inconsistent with who you know yourself to be? Max Lucado in his book titled "Cure For The Common Life" talks about unpacking your bag. He tells about the experience of mistakenly taking the wrong bag at baggage claim in the airport. Once at the hotel Lucado opened the bag to find the items inside were not his. The clothing was too small; the style was different from his. Lucado expressed his frustration but also his intensity to find out where was the bag that belonged to him. Each individual has been given certain qualities and characteristics that make you authentically who you are, so why are you living out of someone else’s’ bag?

What do you do to become authentically you? First recognize that no one else can be you! You are “you-niquely” designed. You are not an accident, you are more than the result of the lust or love of the two people who are your biological parents, you are more than statistical data. You have been “sculpted from nothing into something” (Psalms 139:15; The Message Bible). There is no one else who can do what you do, just the way you do it! You have value!!!

Secondly, discover and deploy the characteristics that are you. Just as Lucado searched for his bag with intensity, spend time in reflection, ask others what they see in you, explore the thing or things you do well and enjoy. These all give clues to assist in self-discovery leading to self-awareness. "Ninety per cent of the world's woe comes from people not knowing themselves, their abilities, their frailties, and even their real virtues. Most of us go all the way through life as complete strangers to ourselves -- so how can we know anyone else?" Sidney J. Harris. Get to know what is in your bag, get to know yourself!!!
